Mission Statement
The chief mission of the Black Faculty and Staff Association at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a voluntary organization of African American university employees, is to promote the interests and concerns of the African American campus community. This mission is grounded in, and derives its essential vitality from our history and legacy as Americans of African descents The specific goals and purposes of the organization are to:
- Be a clearinghouse for information that is beneficial to our members. This operation should not be merely top-down but also bottom-up. Every member should be able to inform the rest of us about important issues and events through email and eventually by posting material on our website. We are often at a disadvantage because we lack timely information. A commitment to information-sharing would help to rectify this problem.
- Sociabally promote commitment. The ability to be at ease with others socially is not only good in it self but promotes greater commitment to activities that are important but may not be fun. When you know someone and they know you, you are less likely to let them down and more like to be responsible and follow through on your commitments.
- Be a support function of BFSA which is integrally connected to the information-sharing and social components of our mission. The university can be an alien and alienating workplace for African Americans. In this space as in others, we need support. This maybe as simple as having someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on, or may involve more significant forms of intervention such as acting as an advisor or agent in a grievance process.
